As Hong Kong sees violent anti-government protests, an increasing number of conferences and events have been cancelled or postponed till further notice. Events in the insurance sector have been hit as well.
The Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK) had decided to postpone the inaugural ASHK Hong Kong Actuarial Summit (HKAS) at the last minute. The event was scheduled to take place from 21-22 November.
Via an urgent email addressed to delegates on 19 November, ASHK announced that the summit will be postponed to April or May 2020 due to “unforeseen circumstances resulting from the latest social situation in Hong Kong”. It also assured delegates that additional information (e.g. refund policy) on the new arrangement will be provided as soon as possible.
The email also said, “The HKAS organizing committee would like to thank our sponsors, supporting organisations, media partner, speakers and all our delegates for your immense support towards this summit so far and express our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. We hope you can still participate when the new date is confirmed and we will keep you posted in due course.”
Apart from HKAS, there have been two other insurance events that have been postponed; the Digital Insurance Agenda (DIA) Hong Kong and LAMP Asia.
Digital Insurance Agenda Hong Kong
European InsurTech conference organiser DIA was all set to launch its first Asia-based event in Hong Kong from 11-13 December with the support of ZA Tech Global, the international business arm of ZhongAn overseeing technology exports.
However, the organiser recently announced that it has decided to postpone DIA Hong Kong in view of the current situation. No tentative date for the postponed date has been announced yet.
The event was slated to feature thought leaders from Asia, Europe and the US as well as over 50 new technology providers across the world showcasing their latest ‘disruptive’ solutions to the audience in eight-minute ‘TED-style’ presentations.
Two months back, GAMA International and GAMA Hong Kong who were the organisers of the 2019 LAMP Asia conference also decided to postpone the conference originally scheduled for 25 to 27 September in Hong Kong.
They said that the next LAMP Asia conference will be held instead at the Hong Kong Convention Center on 18 to 20 May 2020 and delegates will have their 2019 registration transferred to the 2020 conference.
In an official statement, GAMA International CEO Bonnie Godsman said, “We are disappointed, but confident this is the best decision given the situation and to ensure an even more successful event as we forge onward to 2020.”
In 2018, GAMA had planned for LAMP Asia to be held annually instead of once every two years and had planned to commemorate GAMA Hong Kong’s 25th anniversary at the now-postponed 2019 LAMP Asia conference.
As uncertainty looms over the future of the territory, more event cancellations and postponements can be expected but other event organisers might decide to go ahead despite concerns. Earlier this week, the 29th Pacific Insurance Conference was held successfully in Hong Kong from 17-20 November.
