Defence Minister Ron Mark has asked the Defence Force for a national fire risk assessment to prevent a disaster like Australia’s bushfires.
Mr Mark said there was nothing to prevent large-scale blazes from also happening in New Zealand and that he had ordered the assessment shortly before Christmas, Radio New Zealand reported.
“New Zealand needs to look closely at what’s happening in Australia. We need to start some forward thinking and forward planning for our own sakes.”
Mr Mark said other risk assessments had been carried out. One was done on climate change, and another was on bio-defence on the back of climate change.
