A diabetologist from Kerala state in India has purchased and distributed more than 500 COVID-19 health insurance policies to help the needy who are potentially exposed to the virus.
According to a news report published in The Times of India, the majority of those who have received the free COVID-19 health insurance policies from Dr Manoharan Shanmugam are from the underprivileged section of the society and are employed in the healthcare sector.

Dr Shanmugam bought the health insurance policies from ICICI Lombard General Insurance through the SoftBank-backed True Balance app and paid about $1,050 as premium for the policies from his personal account.

He said, “I have distributed the COVID-19 insurance policies free of cost to the staff of my hospital and also insured the staff from three hospitals of my friends.”

Dr Shanmugam also arranged health insurance for some contract workers from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu from his own account. He has also helped insure the contract sanitary workers employed with the southern zone of Indian Railways. Over 80% of these sanitary workers are women.
